Word problems are a type of textbook Maths problems that are designed to help students apply abstract mathematical concepts to “real-world” situations. Success in solving word problems depends on a student’s knowledge of language and structure, ability to interpret vocabulary in mathematical terms, and of course, actual mathematics knowledge and ability. Solving word problems is known to have superior cognitive benefits, owing to which they are generally a part of most Maths academic curriculums for school students. Word problems appear regularly in Maths tests as they integrate a number of Maths concepts in the same problem and test a student’s fundamental understanding of the concepts. These questions are considered challenging by most school going kids as there is also a large amount of ‘language’ that students must attend to in order to understand and solve these problems.
