About Course

The physical world around us (especially how objects in it interact with each other) can be explained by the three laws of motion framed by Newton. These laws govern almost all the physical phenomena which occur in the universe. This course deals with Applied Mechanics, which works along the lines of Newton’s second law. In this law, emphasis is given to the forces that act on an object and changes in the object’s orientation that are caused due to the forces.

In particular, you will learn about friction (resisting forces) and equilibrium (the state in which opposing forces are balanced) in this course. These concepts are integral to the study of Applied Mechanics and are ‘must-knows’ for Civil, Mechanical and Automobile engineers. This course will also prove to be useful for all engineering students as it forms one of the subjects of study in the curriculum. In order to gain the most from this course, it is recommended to subscribe to the Foundational course on Structural Mechanics. In the first section of this course, you will learn about friction, the laws that govern friction and the applications of friction. You will also learn about frictional force property and belt friction. In the next section, you will learn all about Virtual Work and Potential Energy. The last section explains the concept of Equilibrium with an example.

NPTEL
Revolutionizing Engineering Education

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is a project funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). It provides e-learning through online video courses in Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Management and Humanities. The best highlight of this initiative is that the courses are designed by prestigious institutions in India like various IITs and IISc Bangalore. The mission of NPTEL is to enhance the quality of Engineering education in the country by providing free online courseware.
